The First Miss Nigeria Celebrates 88th Year Birthday

Mrs Atinuke Grace Oyelude, the First Miss Nigeria Celebrates 88th Year Birthday.
Mrs Atinuke Grace Oyelude was born on the 26th of November 1931 to the family of Mr James Adeleye Olude and Marthan Dantu both of Isanlu, Yagba East Area of Present Kogi state.
Mrs Atinuke Grace Oyelude was the first Miss Nigeria after winning the maiden edition of miss Nigeria in 1957 at the age of 26.


Atinuke Grace Oyelude was born in ancient Kano city where she was raised and also had her primary and secondary education between 1940 and 1952.
The story of how she participated and became the first kiss Nigeria is an inspiring one such that depict "whatever God has ordained to be, must surely be. Even at her old age, she is still looking attravtively beautiful and full of life.
Miss Nigeria commenced in 1957 as a photo contest. Contestants posted photographs of themselves to the Daily Times headquarters in Lagos where finalists were shortlisted. Successful finalists were afterwards invited to compete in the live final at the Lagos Island Club. At that time, the Miss Nigeria contest did not include a swimsuit competition.
Mrs Atinuke Grace Oyelude was a staff UAC when she represented the then Northern region. After winning the contest, she travelled to England where she studied Nursing. Within months of gaining admission to the School of Nursing inAshford, she was crowned Miss Nigeria.
She tells her story: "I was living in Kano then. My brother saw the advert in the newspapers and advised me to go to Lagos for an interview to be selected as a Miss Nigeria contestant.
" He applied, and the result was that I was suppose to be in Lagos for the Miss Nigeria contest.
"I was working with the UAC then, and they also were involved in the pageant.
"The following day, they got me on a plane to Lagos and that was it.
Mrs Atinuke Grace Oyelude holds chieftaincy titles both in Isanlu and Okunland. She is the Iyaolu of Isanluland and Iyalode of Okunland.
Mrs Atinuke Grace Oyelude has many grandchildren. She is also an Aunt to the late Prof Pius A Adesanmi died on 10 March 2019, when EthiopianAirlines Flight 302 from Addis Ababa to Nairobi crashed shortly after take-off.
